Cet article propose d’interroger la place du canal de Suez dans l’écriture de l’histoire de l’Égypte contemporaine et ses représentations. Le canal tient, dans l’histoire de l’Égypte, une place particulière : il est à la fois considéré comme le moment fondateur d’une nouvelle Égypte et, en même temps, il s’inscrit dans l’histoire longue du pays, avec les échanges depuis l’Antiquité entre la mer Rouge et la mer Méditerranée. L’histoire du canal est indissociable de celle de l’Égypte, mettant en scène des discours et des imaginaires divers selon les périodes. Le récit de son histoire, raconté au travers des écrits, des réalisations artistiques ou architecturales, alimente, jusqu’à s’y confondre, le récit national de l’Égypte.

When Suez narrates EgyptThis paper proposes to question the place of the Suez Canal in the writing of the history of contemporary Egypt and its representations. The canal holds a special place in the history of Egypt: it is both seen as the founding moment of a new Egypt and, at the same time, it is part of the country’s long history, with the exchanges since ancient times between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. The history of the canal is inextricably linked to that of Egypt, staged by various speeches and imaginaries in different periods. The narrative of its history, told through writings, artistic or architectural works, nourishes, to the point of confusing, Egypt’s national narrative.
