Analysis of the public debate in the UK shows that a considerable portion of the national press remains in favor of multiculturalism. The treatment of the major events of the last decade (the 2005 London terror attacks and the debate around “Britishness”) has revealed the existence of radically different understandings of justice in postcolonial societies. The use of an inductive methodology shows, first, the permanence of a very sharp Right-Left divide; second, a wide variety in the positions of social actors; and third, a broader spectrum of political ideas than the dominant theory of a “multiculturalism backlash” would suggest.
