What does “Nicaea” mean to us? Often, it means the “creed” which so many Christians still regularly recite to this day. The normative status of this text is debated, especially among Protestants in modernity. There might be a third way, beyond any hasty sidelining of the creed or its elevation to a supreme normative status: its relative normativity may need to be rediscovered. Several voices, in contemporary Christian theology, note the striking lacunae which characterize the creed, as well as the importance of not merely looking backwards, toward the past, but above all in the direction of God who is, who was, and who is to come.

Que signifie « Nicée » pour nous ? Le plus souvent, il signifie le Credo que tant de chrétiens récitent aujourd’hui encore. Le statut normatif de ce texte est débattu, notamment au sein du protestantisme moderne. Entre rejet pur et simple, d’un côté, et élévation indue de l’autre, une troisième voie paraît souhaitable, qui confère au Credo un statut normatif relatif. Plusieurs voix s’élèvent d’ailleurs, en théologie contemporaine, non seulement pour rappeler les lacunes du Credo, mais aussi, de manière plus importante, pour orienter nos regards non pas simplement vers le passé, mais vers Dieu qui vient, vers l’à-venir de Dieu.
