When End-of-the-World Places Are a Few Hours Away: The Illusion of Remoteness within Small Tourist Islands

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2005. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : To people's mind, the island still personifies remoteness. The fascinating image of this small territory, cut off by the sea from the rest of the world, has been built partly through literature, journey or historical stories recalling prison, refuge or “Robinson Crusoe” pictures, which have been largely reactivated by tourist advertisement. Remoteness has become a selling argument and participates now deeply to the attractiveness of the island tourist product. But what does remoteness exactly mean? In fact, this notion is more and more difficult to define, a point which seems to be underlined by the numerous but ineffective measurement indices. Moreover, island remoteness, which is much enhanced within tourist brochures, is a complete illusion insofar as this activity is precisely based on the break of remoteness and on the quest for the best accessibility.
