Some characters of Greek mythology illustrate various aspects of maternal destructivity. Though the fantasy of cannibalistic incorporation of the infant is quite common – particularly in fairy tales – the destructivity which really threatens the baby is of a different nature. The child is first of all an alien and maybe a threat to the mother’s mental life. Parental separation may arouse the uncanny. Winnicott considers that the mother must love her child enough. For Lacan a relationship lured in a mirror image leads to hatred. From hatred of the child’s otherness to its imprisonment in the maternal world, the figure of a mother who cannot let the child live touches on the taboo of incest.

À l’appui de certaines figures de la mythologie grecque s’illustrent différentes faces de la destructivité maternelle. Car si le fantasme d’incorporation cannibalique vis-à-vis du nourrisson est assez courant, repris par des contes notamment, la destructivité qui met véritablement en péril l’enfant est d’une autre teneur. L’enfant est d’abord un étranger et peut être une menace pour la psyché de la mère. La séparation conjugale peut réveiller l’étrangeté. Pour Winnicott, la mère doit aimer « suffisamment » son enfant. Avec Lacan, la relation, si elle s’aveugle dans le spéculaire, conduit à la haine. De la haine de l’autre à l’enfermement dans la Chose maternelle, le spectre de la faillite maternelle qui ne laisse pas vivre combine aux confins de l’interdit de l’inceste.
