Critical attempts to assign reading an essential role in the construction of meaning have often ignored the materiality of texts and erased the social and historical determinations of the act of reading. If readings cannot be deduced from texts or books, they are nevertheless situated within a set of conditions of possibility defined by writing strategies, the materiality of writings and the expectations of interpretive communities. Understanding how, in different times and places, for diverse genres and audiences, restricted freedoms and transgressed constraints intersect is the task that brings together historians of texts, books, and readings.

Les tentatives critiques pour assigner à la lecture un rôle essentiel dans la construction du sens ont souvent ignoré la matérialité des textes et effacé les déterminations sociales et historiques de l’acte de lecture. Si les lectures ne peuvent pas être déduites des textes ou des livres, elles sont néanmoins situées dans un ensemble de conditions de possibilité définies par les stratégies d’écriture, la matérialité des écrits et les horizons d’attente des communautés d’interprétation. Comprendre comment, en des temps et des lieux différents, pour des genres et des publics divers, se croisent libertés bridées et contraintes transgressées est la tâche qui réunit historiens des textes, des livres et des lectures.
