Caroline Brémaud, an emergency doctor, has swapped her stethoscope for a pen to warn the public about the collapse of the “health care system the whole world envies us for.” Here, she puts her professional experience and knowledge at the service of literature to heal the hospital, patients, and health care professionals differently. In response to the “breakdown of public hospitals,” which have suffered for decades under austerity policies that sacrifice humanity for profitability, she reminds us that care is not merely a technical act with a price tag; care is first and foremost a human relationship. Fighting against the dehumanization of hospitals is, therefore, giving ourselves the chance to preserve human-centered care.
