Since the beginning of the 2010s, health and feminist activists have used French law on patient’s rights, dating from 2002, to criticize publicly some gynecologists’ practices. This context is an invitation to question patients’ everyday understanding of their rights and consent during a gynecological consultation. This article aims to understand the ways in which women make sense of their experiences during a gynecological consultation. Through an empirical analysis of women’s legal and rights consciousness, it displays three frames that women use to judge their gynecological experiences. These frameworks come from the historical and political struggles around the definition of the modes of the doctor-patient relationship. They enable us to understand the ways in which patients frame consent and how they perceive an experience as harmful.
