In the 1980’s, the Union nationale inter-universitaire (UNI) gradually established itself as the main university association for the French right. Focusing primarily on French politics, the UNI was traumatised by the events of 1968 which had led to its creation. The resurgence of international tensions in the second half of the 1970’s rekindled the interest of some of its activists in international relations. Still convinced that a global communist conspiracy was at work, the UNI eventually opened a specialised unit on international issues. With meagre material and human resources, its mission was to facilitate the establishment of international networks with so-called conservative and anti-communist unions, associations and parties abroad. Its involvement in the preparations for the Kingston International Conference made this task easier. This unit should also infiltrate and, if possible, control French associations likely to help the French anti-communist struggle on a European and/or Western scale. Lastly, it should disseminate as much as possible information relating in any way to the manifestation of "Marxist subversion" in France and abroad and the means used to oppose it through a newspaper, Solidarité atlantique. The gradual collapse of the Soviet Union marks an identity crisis to which the unit tries to respond by finding new enemies to fight, in vain.
