Alphonse Gratry (1805-1872) est une des figures marquantes du monde intellectuel catholique du xixe siècle. Il est aujourd’hui bien oublié mais il est à l’origine d’une œuvre originale et suggestive qu’on a beaucoup lue parmi les catholiques français jusque dans l’entre-deux-guerres. Polytechnicien et philosophe, il est à l’origine, dans le domaine de la pensée catholique, d’une lignée de penseurs indépendants du thomisme, illustrée notamment par Léon Ollé-Laprune, Maurice Blondel et Lucien Laberthonnière. L’article revient sur son œuvre philosophique, publiée pour l’essentiel sous le Second Empire, en s’attachant à présenter successivement l’homme et l’auteur, les grands axes de sa doctrine et sa réception dans l’Europe de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle.

Examining Christianity in the xixth century. The mystical eclectism of Alphonse Gratry (1805-1872)Alphonse Gratry (1805-1872) is one of the most prominent Catholic intellectuals of the xixth century. He has long been ignored in spite of having produced an original and evocative body of work which was very popular among French Catholics until the interwar period. A philosopher and graduate of the École Polytechnique, he spawned within the Catholic school of thought a line of independent Thomistic thinkers, namely Léon Ollé-Laprune, Maurice Blondel and Lucien Laberthonnière. This article delves into his philosophical œuvre, published for the most part under the Second Empire, and aims to present first the man and author, then the primary tenets of his doctrine and finally its reception in Europe throughout the second half of the xixth century.
