RésuméCet article porte sur les instances internationales de l’ethnologie européenne, ses principaux acteurs, ses lieux de rencontre et les modalités des coopérations à la fin des années 1930, marquées par l’intensité des relations franco-scandinaves. On expose les motivations et les défis de la coopération internationale et les deux acteurs principaux à l’époque, Sigurd Erixon et Georges Henri Rivière. Mais sont aussi présentés les trois organisations internationales – la Commission internationale des Arts et Traditions populaires ( ciap), l’International Association for Folklore and Ethnology ( iafe et plus tard iaeef), et le Congrès international de Folklore ( cifl) et les efforts pour établir une science ethnologique « européaniste » à partir de la grande diversité d’études et de traditions nationales et régionales. S. Erixon et G. H. Rivière, le premier avec son iaeef et le projet d’une « ethnologie (régionale) européenne », et le second avec son cifl et le projet d’un « folklore » européen, d’abord rivaux durent s’unir devant la menace d’une Volkskunde allemande de plus en plus nazifiée. Mais ce fut une alliance bien fragile, interrompue par la guerre. L’article illustre les liens entre ethnologie et politique dans le contexte de la deuxième avant-guerre.

The article deals with international relations in European ethnology, its principal actors, meeting places, and modes of cooperation in the second half of the 1930s, a period marked by close French-Scandinavian contacts. The motives and challenges of international cooperation are presented, as well as the two principal actors in these years, Sigurd Erixon and Georges Henri Rivière, the three international organizations – ciap, iaeef and cifl, and the efforts to establish a discipline of European ethnology which should bridge the gap between the many regional and national variants of ethnology and folklore. Erixon and Rivière, the first one with his iaeef and a project of a European (regional) ethnology, and the second with his cifl and a project of a European “folklore”, started out as rivals, but confronted with a German Volkskunde steadily more nazified, they had to join forces. It was a fragile alliance, however, which was stopped by the war. The article illustrates the relations between ethnology and politics in the years preceeding World War II.

ZusammenfassungVorliegender Artikel beleuchtet die internationalen Verbindungen im Bereich der europäischen Ethnologie, ihre bedeutendsten Vertreter, ihre Zusammentreffen sowie die Modalitäten der Zusammenarbeit Ende der 30er Jahre, einer Periode die sich durch die Intensität der franko-skandinavischen Beziehungen charakterisiert. Der Autor präsentiert die Motivationen und die Herausforderungen der internationalen Kooperation sowie die beiden Hauptakteure jener Epoche, Sigurd Erixon und Georges Henri Rivière, ebenso wie die drei internationalen Organisationen –  ciap, iaeef und cifl. Ziel ihrer Bemühungen war es, eine „vergleichende europäische“ Wissenschaft zu etablieren, die die großen Unterschiede zwischen den nationalen und regionalen wissenschaftlichen Schulen und Forschungstraditionen überbrücken sollte. Erixon als Vertreter der iaeef mit dem Projekt einer „(regionalen) europäischen Ethnologie“ und G. H. Rivière mit der cifl und der Idee einer europäischen „Folklore“, die sich zuerst als Gegner gegenüberstanden, sahen sich, angesichts einer fortschreitenden Nazifizierung der deutschen Volkskunde, dazu gezwungen, ihre Kräfte zu vereinen. Ihre Allianz war jedoch nie wirklich stabil und wurde bald durch den Krieg unterbrochen. Der Artikel illustriert die Beziehungen zwischen Ethnologie und Politik im Kontext der Vorkriegszeit.
