Evolution of borderline personality disorder from adolescence to adulthood

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and frequent disorder, the onset of which generally occurs in adolescence. Clinicians are often reluctant to diagnose BPD in adolescence because of controversy regarding the reliability and validity of such diagnosis prior to adulthood. Little is known about the long-term prognosis associated with the disorder. Like borderline adults, borderline adolescents seem to have a wide range of outcomes, ranging from clinical remission to suicide, addiction, and poor levels of social functioning. Even if borderline symptoms resolve relatively quickly, the related dysphoric states and affective symptoms are more pervasive and persistent.
