The psychoanalyst Hélène Deutsch, a contemporary of Freud, was one of the first to reflect upon “as if” personalities, comparable to what we today call “borderline personalities.” Toward the end of her life, Deutsch, who also had a tumultuous life, particularly during her own adolescence, became interested in the protest movements of the American youth. This work rekindles her research into the psychic structure as distinct from psychic functioning.
