Patients do not always use the various inhaler devices prescribed for asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) properly, leading to potential poor disease control. Patient education is essential, and revaluation of the inhalation techniques seems to be necessary for some patients, especially in case of exacerbations/asthma attacks. In these situations, the revaluation of these therapeutics at hospital can be necessary. A survey was conducted in July/August 2019 in a general hospital in France to evaluate nurses’ and clinicians’ knowledge about asthma/COPD management and to assess the current practices. Two questionnaires were created for nurses/clinicians. Thirty-seven nurses and 16 clinicians took part. Regarding the pathophysiology and management of asthma/COPD, the nurses obtained 69% correct answers. The mean percentage of compliance for nebulization practices was 38%. Only 49% of nurses systematically carry out an evaluation of patients’ ability to use their inhaler device independently, and 68.8% of clinicians answered “not at all” or “not very much” when it came to being comfortable with inhalation techniques. We noted an insufficient mastery from nurses for asthma/COPD physiopathology and therapeutics, and a poor compliance rate for the prescription/administration practices of nebulized medicines. The assessment of inhaler device use in patients is not structured. An action plan was implemented that included professional training and access to resources and tools for healthcare professionals, in order to improve the health care pathway.
