Après avoir identifié leurs valeurs lexicographique, diététique, gastronomique et symbolique, examiné l’hypothèse qu’ils seraient la signature de l’artiste, il conclut que les concombres donnent une saveur particulière à l’œuvre et partant, à l’épisode biblique qu’il illustre ainsi qu’au rite liturgique qu’il évoque.

This article explains what cucumbers painted on a Venetian Last Supper could evoke at the end of the Middle Ages. After identifying their lexicographic, dietary, gastronomic, and symbolic values, examining the hypothesis that they would be the artist’s signature, the author concludes that cucumbers give a particular flavour to the work and therefore to the biblical episode that it illustrates and to the liturgical rite which it evokes.
