Iran’s regional trade, particularly with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, has become a central element in the Iranian strategy to resist American sanctions. Indeed, the United States’ sanctions are more difficult to apply in the region (local companies having few relations with the US market). However, the United Arab Emirates, which is an important regional partner to Iran, applies US sanctions with great rigor. And despite the embargo imposed by Saudi Arabia on Qatar, trade between Iran and Qatar remains at a relatively low level.
