Practice of umbilical cord care in the maternity and neonatology wards of health centers in the Kozah district (Togo)

Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study on umbilical cord care in the Kozah district carried out from March 1 to June 30, 2020, in nine health centers including three referral centers. Results: We interviewed 102 providers on umbilical cord care in nine centers visited. Talking about providers’ knowledge of cord care, the majority (99.02 percent) had good knowledge of cord care. The products used for care varied from center to center and according to the care provider. Four percent chlorhexidine gel is the product most used by providers (39.21 percent). There was no written and posted protocol in any of the centers visited. The equipment used for clamping, sectioning, ligation, and cord care varied from center to center. Kocher forceps and Barr clamps for clamping and scissors for sectioning the cord were used in 3.92 percent and 8.82 percent, respectively. Conclusion: It emerges from this study that the practice of cord care in the district of Kozah is satisfactory. However, no center has a written and posted protocol on umbilical cord care.
