Over the last two decades of developing the literature on the effectual entrepreneurial approach, which included thinking about entrepreneurship as a science of the artificial, I have got to grips with several objections to the very idea of a science of the artificial. In responding to these criticisms, I have also learned to make an appreciative case for the idea and its importance to entrepreneurship research. In this commemorative article, I share my experiences and insights into the development of this line of research, interwoven with personal memories of working with Herbert Simon during my doctoral studies and afterwards.
