Commenting on Derrida’s Monolinguisme de l’autre, this article deconstructs the main argument of linguistic nationalism: the idea that language would or should be « the propriety of a people », a propriety that we all have to appropriate. Countering this argument, Marc Crépon proposes another promise more accurate to describe our relationship to language.
