Two Ways of Building the Personality SC-IATs (Single Category Implicit Association Test): An Assessment in the Masculinity/Femininity Domain

This research aimed to evaluate the potential of the SC-IAT (Single Category Association Test; Karpinski & Steinman, 2006) in assessing the implicit self-concept of masculinity (M) and femininity (F). The SC-IAT is a promising instrument, showing good reliability and some interesting new features compared to the standard IAT (Implicit Association Test; Greenwald, McGhee & Schwartz, 1998). The SC-IAT’s architecture allows imagining several tools tapping potentially the same implicit construct of personality. In the implicit gender cognition domain, it is possible to build a SC-IAT MF (target : me, attribute : masculinity/feminity), a SC-IAT M (target: me/other, attribute: masculinity), and a SC-IAT F (target: me/other, attribute : femininity). SC-IAT M and SC-IAT F could reveal more information than the SC-IAT MF alone. We wanted to explore the value of these different designs through several construct validity indicators. Results are discussed and new research directions are provided.
