Ecological arguments and the cognitive dissonance of customer-users in the implementation of underground waste transport in eco-districts

This study focuses on customer-users' attitudinal and behavioral perspectives regarding an automated vacuum waste collection system (AVWCS) implemented in Romainville (France) eco-districts. We implemented a qualitative exploratory analysis based on interviews with the project owner, the company operating the system, and the inhabitants of Romainville. Our study shows that the AVWCS is the subject of ambivalent customer-user representations despite major public communication campaigns regarding its practicality and positive ecological impact. Some customer-users' attitudes/behaviors are dissonant, combining the AVWCS’s ecological arguments, reliability, and viability. Cognitive dissonance can deter some customer-users from AVWCS adoption, leading to effective resistant and sometimes deviant behaviors.
