“I know what’s going on: Young people are going on!”: Targeting strategies in teen movies from the 1950s until today

The goal of this paper is to establish a link between the emergence and evolution of “teen movies” in the United States, and the construction, by cultural industries, and more specifically film producers, of a specific type of address, targeting a new audience—a tone deprived of any moralistic or didactic dimension. It is through the emergence of this specific mode of address—more than through a study of contents or a generic form—that this paper will try to examine the construction and mechanisms of a complex cinematographic genre. This genre evolved from the fantasies of the “moral panic” of the beginning of the twentieth century to address its young audience on equal terms in contemporary movies.
