Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Ancient Christian art of Ethipia, long ignored by the rest of the world, is becoming esteemed, admired, and even coveted, outside of Ethiopia. This book is the response of the Ethiopian Church, legitimate owner and user of these treasures, to this new situation, rich in communication potential, but not without risk of misunderstandings and even of looting. It was produced at the request of the Holy Synod by five scholars of the Orthodox Tewahido Church and, for technical aspects, by a Western scholar who has been studying Ethiopian Christian art for many years. The book has three main focuses: The first two sections aim to throw light on the signification, for the faithful and the scholars, of the liturgical treasures which the modern materialistic world considers only as art objects. The first section, in describing the history and devotional practices of six large monasteries, deals with the coalescence of the faith with the liturgical treasures considered as holy relics. The second section reveals the symbolism of the liturgical objects. The third section contains the recommendations of the Holy Synod for a policy for the conservation, preservation and promotion of the liturgical treasures of the Ethiopian Church. Strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages of the Church are presented without concession. The fourth section is a practical application of the Church’s acknowledgement and acceptation of modern technologies and methods which can contribute to the realisation of the concepts expressed in the recommendations. The text is a report on the restoration of several precious manuscripts and icons by renowned experts, and the installation of a new museum in a monastery.
