RésuméL’Afrique est à une période charnière entre l’ancien Internet à faible débit et l’installation de systèmes à plus fort débit qui permettent de bénéficier de la convergence de toutes les informations. La couverture des territoires s’est améliorée mais les inégalités entre et à l’intérieur des pays sont considérables. La téléphonie mobile a explosé au détriment de la téléphonie fixe et Internet progresse lentement. Une nouvelle économie informelle s’est installée dans des marchés non compétitifs, trop chers et encore mal régulés.

International connectivity in Africa is moving from scarcity to overcapacity with growing competition between large private operators. Yet extending terrestrial networks and bringing bandwidth to customers is an increasingly complex matter and the disparities across and within countries are considerable. The mobile phone is expanding to the detriment of fixed telephony and Internet broadband is still not widespread. Liberalization is patchy (26 out of 54 incumbent) and prices remain too high relative to the standard of living. The democratization of mobile telephony has generated a largely informal “new economy” and the African model of access to telecentres seems to be collapsing.
