RésuméLa recherche d’information (RI) fut fondée peu de temps après l’avènement des premiers ordinateurs, et constitue certainement la plus ancienne application de l’informatique à l’accès aux documents électroniques. Près de soixante ans plus tard, et une vingtaine d’années après la révolution d’Internet et ses milliards de pages accessibles sur la Toile, la RI est plus que jamais d’actualité. Le domaine fut longtemps réduit à des applications non interactives où l’utilisateur devait soumettre ses besoins d’information à des intermédiaires experts en « documentation automatique », et qui avaient seuls accès au système de recherche d’information. Le domaine est bien sûr à présent entièrement tourné vers la RI interactive, associant de manière étroite utilisateur et moteur de recherche, dans des environnements tenant de plus en plus compte de la situation de recherche en cours, de façon à rendre cette quête plus efficace (la « recherche d’information en contexte »). Cet article présente un large tour d’horizon sur cette évolution, les étapes principales de son histoire les grands domaines de recherche actuels, pour conclure sur les perspectives d’évolution qui nous semblent les plus probables.

Information Retrieval (IR) was founded soon after the construction of the first computers and, as such, is certainly the oldest application of computer science to the problem of accessing digitalized documents. About sixty years later and twenty years after the Internet revolution and its billions of pages on the Web IR is even more in the air. The domain was for a long time restricted to non interactive applications where the user had to submit his information needs to expert intermediaries in the so-called « automated documentation » and who were the only ones having access to the retrieval system. Of course the domain is by now entirely aimed towards interactive information retrieval, an approach based on tight collaboration between users and the search engine in environments able to take into account the particular search situations to improve retrieval effectiveness (« information retrieval in context »). This paper presents a history of RI over several decades, the main present research topics and trends, and finally concludes with some of the most probable research evolutions.
