An exclusive night scene

What are the conditions of convertibility of social capital accumulated through service relations to the wealthy? This article adopts an ethnographic approach that focuses on the exclusive and globalized scene of night clubs and parties to trace the work and aspirations of VIP party promoters. The latter are disproportionately men belonging to visible minorities hired to bring young white women and rich male clients to high-end destinations. I trace the social relations between these promoters and clients across key nodes of the global VIP scene: New York, the Hamptons, Miami, and the French Riviera. Promoters accumulate vast ties to elites in this milieu, but their potential to convert these ties into resources in other fields is limited by their close affiliations with the market for leisure, and their racial and class marginality. Thus, while these promoters often try to develop business ventures with the elite, they largely remain confined to a subservient role as service providers for their wealthy clients.
