Denis Cogneau’s Un empire bon marché (Empire on the Cheap) settles an old debate by demonstrating that the costs of colonial conquest and government were very low for metropolitan France. Material support for the development of colonized territories was, if anything, somewhat weaker than in other colonial empires. Overall, and taking into account the political and military advantages of colonial possessions, colonial expansion was almost certainly highly profitable for France.
