For Freud, theater replaces play, as it somehow has the same function. Theater, through the passions it elicits, questions the therapeutic virtues of a theatrical moment shared with psychotic patients. The setting gives transference a new space to unfold, thus allowing the “bond” to become physical and able to be felt. Laughter and humor become symbolic levers for a safe exploration, aimed at revealing the unconscious motives of a psychic situation that until then had been unthinkable. The repeated practice of theater mobilizes unconscious communication, allowing the subject to use fiction as a means to express “the inexpressible,” and avoid the traps of destructive action of which he is the stage, not the author.
