The inability of some families facing great difficulties to cooperate with social workers—whom they exhaust—has prompted the emergence of therapeutic interventions at home. Based on these interventions and a discussion about counter-transference, this paper presents the follow-up of a teenager and her baby whose family has a history of mistreatment and multiple placements in foster care. The therapist endures the experience of the psychic mistreatment of the child, but in parallel, the members of the family group discover “a psychic space” able to help them to transform the impulsive and rough violence they exchange into an intersubjective exchange. This account leads us to discover how the teenager and her family will, after a long period of time, “grab this space” to bring about some positive change in their own capacity to think.
