L’expérience corporelle du blessé médullaire présente des spécificités sensorielles, difficilement classable à l’intérieur des catégories usuelles de la sensibilité « valide ». Si ces éprouvés ne sont que très peu sémantisés en début de trajectoire sanitaire – ils sont décrits par les patients comme une différence consécutive à l’accident–, la poursuite des soins et de la rééducation ne permet que peu de progression de ce processus de mise en sens desdits phénomènes. C’est alors à une étrangeté incarnée que fait face l’homme blessé. La poursuite de la sémantisation collective et progressive du vécu des patients mènera à l’expérience d’une cohabitation avec une altérité en son propre corps.

Sense and Sensibility ? Elements in the Analysis of the Bodily Experiences of a Patient with Medullary Paraplegia The bodily experiences of people with medullary paraplegia have their own specific sensorial characteristics which prove very difficult to classify within the ‘normal’categories used for those with no handicap. While these sensations are only infrequently described by patients at the beginning of treatment, referred to as the mere result of their accident, medical treatment and physiotherapy alone do little to give meaning to these phenomena. This leaves those injured with the impression that their body is strangeness made flesh. Only by putting these sensations and impressions into words and sharing this experience with others can the individual learn to cohabit with this otherness as part of his or her own body.
