The Annales and Past & Present: A histoire croisée
Type de matériel :
5
The article offers a histoire croisée of the Annales and the leading British-based generalist history periodical, Past & Present, founded in 1952. The latter was avowedly inspired by the Annales’ openness to innovative and interdisciplinary forms of history-writing, and the two journals enjoyed particular prominence during the golden age of social history in the 1960s and 1970s. Whereas the Annales have consistently embraced high levels of reflexivity regarding their form and content, Past & Present maintains a more empirical and pragmatic approach. Both periodicals are generalist history journals, covering all periods of the past. This presents particular challenges as the discipline evolves in new ways and as academic publishing comes to terms with electronic forms of publication.
