Based on the current revival of research and on his historical work on Baloch society, the author proposes avenues of comparative reflection on the impact of several historical turning points, since World War II, on the transformation of Middle Eastern frontier societies and on the interaction between tribal and religious facts. The article looks in particular at the influence of a succession of confessional mobilisations on the former southern flanks of the USSR since the last decade of the Cold War.
