As a tribute to Jean-Pierre Pinel, this article sets out to provide a historical perspective, recalling how his work forms part of the “extension of psychoanalysis” advocated by René Kaës. It establishes links between some of the concepts he “invented” (functional homology, melancholic/vivifying nostalgia, institutional “incorporat”) and those of institutional psychotherapy (transference constellation in particular) but also those relating to the phoric trilogy (phoric function, semaphoric function and metaphoric function).
