This article analyses trends in social inequalities in housing in the Île-de-France Region through a social geography approach based on the analysis of statistical data from the?1999 and?2008 population censuses at the sub-municipal level of statistical block groups (known as Iris in France). In addition to the use of data from the?2008 survey, which have received little attention at this scale, we cross-tabulate household dwelling characteristics and socio-professional categories. This process permits, on the one hand, an analysis of the social profile of the types of statistical block groups determined according to the dwelling characteristics and, on the other, the identification of social inequalities within a single type, in particular according to the differentiated occupancy of the housing stock segments. One of these types stands out from the others because it is essentially based on the dynamics of new construction within the existing urban fabric. In line with existing research on settlement patterns and policies, we show that the new construction clearly leads to an increased population of managers and professionals, whether the municipalities are already wealthy or still working class.
