A spot of one’s own: The diy philosophy in urban sports

Within a growing literature aimed at understanding the specific features of urban sports, this article focuses on a trend among certain riders to build their own spots. The findings are drawn from a study based on six semi-structured interviews and a series of participant observations. The analysis is organised in three parts. I begin by attempting to identify the ‘rider-builders’ and their motives. I then try to explain how and why the diy spots are built. I conclude by examining the relations between the riders and the managers or owners of the sites where the spots are found. The case of these diy spots thus helps to define the complexity of the larger production of space in today’s city.
