This text puts forward the question of Lacan’s relation to topology from the study of one of the first moments when he resorts to the notion of space in the topological sense of the term. We seek to grasp the conditions for the resort to the notion of surface in the construction of the R diagram. We will show how this progression is inscribed in the wake of a question on the place, a question already raised in the first elaborations on the subject’s relation to the structure of language.
