Legislation in the 17th century gave strong legitimacy to legal experts appointed to verify ledger entries. The configuration of the Lyon expert market, which included several different professions, engendered rivalries that led to a refinement of their discourse. For two decades (1670-1690), tensions between notaries and ledger entry verifiers were exacerbated, thus helping to construct expertise as a science and make the expert into a scientific figure.
