Many commonplaces in war films are more than semantic frames for cultural pictures. A battlefield, for example, is both a trope and a space. So is the stage, since diversion is also a way to recount history. Wars on screen allow for a purgation both for the characters in the production and the audience in the theatre?: according to the epoch and its propaganda, they prevent people (characters or spectators) from falling into sentimentality or bellicosity. Theatrical shows in war movies express a mass representation of war and army life, including the life of civilians, of women, who are most notably absent from the battlefield. The stage, in war films, is a baroque space where buffoons tell the naked truth about the realities of war.
