The German retreat via the western bank of the Rhône river (August 1944)
Type de matériel :
65
The withdrawal of German forces stationed to the west of the Rhône has been the subject of few studies. Yet with the harassment from the French Resistance and the Allied attacks from the air, this withdrawal was no military walkover and it deserves some attention. The administrative units of the OFK of Toulouse, at first blocked in Ardèche, were cleared by the arrival of units attached to the IVe Luftwaffe corps coastal sector which made possible the withdrawal of all the forces along the west bank of the Rhône beyond Lyon. Nevertheless, some slower moving Marschgruppen, mainly “Ost Truppen”, failed to reach the main forces and were captured in Ardèche.
