Old enough to die: Age in assisted suicide in Switzerland
Type de matériel :
100
Assisted suicide mainly concerns the elderly. This practice, as well as other contemporary forms of dying (euthanasia, palliative care), epitomizes recent individual and collective transformations in our relationship to death. Although assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, its operationalization cannot be taken for granted. Each request is evaluated in accordance with a set of recommendations. During this decision-making process, the notion of age is an underlying theme of the arguments and justifications put forward. Based on an ethnographic study, this article brings to light and analyzes different points of view in order to highlight how the question of age is invoked as a constituent element in the elaboration of this acceptability.
