The 2008 Presidential elections had various factors that came into play in determining the landslide victory of Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Some of these factors are structural, some are contextual, and some are candidate or campaign specific. Using the Butler swing measure, we showed that these conditions were not uniformly experienced throughout the country.The democratic swing was stronger in fast growing areas that tend to attract white college educated workers and Hispanic immigrants. Some of these trends pose potential problems for the Republicans because they display geographical tendencies that can hurt the coalition in the long term because of the Electoral College system.
