Points of passage: Language diversity, translation, and comprehension

This paper tries to argue that between the diversity of languages, which seems to lead to a plurality of worlds, and the ideal of universal communication, which is beyond the reach of all existing languages, there are local experience fields where diversity and communicability do not exclude each other. It is the case of plurilinguism, of translation on an international scale and of our ordinary way of understanding other discourses. These “overlapping structures” show how much cultures are inherently diverse and that this inner diversity may be a key for bypassing linguistic limitations.
