The editorial sets out the contents and sequence of events behind the issue devoted to the topic of discernment, the fruit of the Ignatian tradition, as Pope Francis advocates the exercise, particularly in his exhortations Amoris laetitia and Christus vivit. The entire Church and each of its members are invited to develop a true culture of call and discernment, in the same process as the one used at the 2018 synod of bishops, be that in individual spiritual guidance, in the implementation of a diocesan dynamic, in the daily life of each baptised Christian, or in pastoral ministry to young people and the seminary formation, in catechesis and the catechumenate. In his address given when he received his honorary doctorate at the University of Fribourg, the Jesuit C. Theobald shows us the application of discernment to urgent theological and pastoral situations for the present moment.
