This article analyses the role of European universities in the making of a Kurdish identity in the 1940’s/1950’s before the Kurdish Students Society in Europe was created in 1960. For these students, who were to become intellectuals and activists of the Kurdish movement, studying in Europe was a turning point. The frienships they made and figures they met made them become aware of a shared Kurdish identity beyond national borders and were the first steps towards a new marxist reading of the Kurdish issue.
