This article puts forward an overview of the literature on the growing middle classes in emerging East-Asian countries according to three perspectives. The definition and the measure of these classes are first questioned. The microeconomic characteristics of these classes in terms of consumption and investment in human capital are then examined. Finally, the capacity of these rapidly changing social groups to provoke political change is evaluated, in particular in the light of the specific socio-political configurations of each country in the region.
