This article draws on the colonial archives of British administrative practices to study how bodies are differentiated within the framework of social interactions between British colonial officials and starving Indians in Bengal in the 19th century. It shows that, by setting bodies in crisis, famine disrupts the colonial interaction rituals. Despite increasing access to Indian bodies, interactions with starving individuals also contribute to normalize famine in colonial India.
