Napoleon in Exile on Saint Helena. First Part: The Time of Exile

Bibliographically speaking, the years of Napoleon’s exile on St Helena were some of his richest. These texts, whether memoirs dictated to his companions in exile, the remembrances of the companions themselves, or accounts written by visitors to the island or by faithful servants of the fallen Emperor, are very numerous, and they give an extraordinarily detailed picture (geographical, human or psychological) of the banishment. Europe continued to be fascinated by Napoleon I (for his supporters) or General Bonaparte (for his victors), and publishers provided their customers with plenty to get their teeth into, with compilations of accounts, descriptions of the island, poems and pamphlets. The return of the emperor’s mortal remains in 1840 relit the flame of interest and led to new publications.
