How are foresters at the Office national des forêts (ONF) (National Forests Office) coping with the transformations facing the organization, with the advent, since the turn of the millennium, of New Public Management, the priority given to commercial activities, the rise of numbers-driven culture, and the privatization of certain roles and departments? Rather than focusing on the destructuring, difficulties, and ethical suffering of forestry teams, Stéphane Le Lay and Ramuntcho Tellechea follow the example of a group managing more than fifty mountain forests. This group, which has managed to maintain collective operations, has been able to negotiate with its line management and local players to ensure that sorting operations are managed in a way that takes full account of the ecosystem conservation objectives.
