Many scholars have studied how rites shape experiences of consumption, but they focused primarily on hedonistic experiences. This paper investigates a peculiar space of consumption: the restaurant Dans le noir where patrons eat in total darkness and are served by blind waiters. It shows that rituals are numerous even if nobody sees them, but that they are disrupted due to the physical incapacity to perform some rites, whether rituals of interaction or of eating. Lastly, this paper addresses the ritualization of the passage from light to darkness. For some hours, patrons are in the margin of society, but this allows them to find sense in a mundane experience of consumption by moving closer to blind people.
