This study is about the behaviors, positionings, and adaptations of a Colombian exile and of a social worker working in an asylum seekers reception and accommodation center in French Guiana. Our analysis has been built on interviews and takes place within a theoretical perspective of interstructuration between the subject and the institutions: hence it emphasizes their courses of resistance and creativity in a context characterized by adversity. However, while both users and professionals seem to be endowed with a practical cleverness demonstrating their local knowledge and their abilities to cope and invent, it is essentially the importance they give to values deeply rooted in the meaning of life that appears to guide their behaviors, enrich their choices, and sustain their dynamics of personalization.
